What is the purpose of the box that is between the turbo inlet and air filters on a 2000 e250 with 7.3

I believe what you are referring to would be the resonator box. It cancels out most of the low frequency "bellow" sound that comes out from the intake. I removed mine for a little to see how much of a difference it really makes. I ended up getting a bit of a headach after listening to that low frequency sound, so I put it back on.

removing it makes changing the fuel filter somewhat easier
...some have capped the outlet hole with a spray can cap...drill holes(3) thru cap and air intake housing, rtv and zip ties hold it fine...
it is a little noisier but so is the motor ...i noticed little difference when I had it in place...
