7.3 with a 5r110

I was wondering if anybody knew if a 4r100 can be replaced with the 5r110?

Yes but it's considered a waste when you can get your 4R100 built to be stronger then the 5R110 for the same price or cheaper.

It would take alot of work to do it. You would need an adapter plate, TCM and a way to make the PCM and TCM communicate. or a standalone trans controller. By the time you do all that it would be alot more cost effective to have BTS or John Wood build your 4r100

I've thought of that, but wouldn't your fuel mileage go up considering you got 5 speeds?

Still with the expense I could do other things to get better fuel mileage. Like add an external overdrive unit.

No, the final drive is still the same ratio. .71.

For about the same money you could rebuild the 4R yourself and add a mechanical overdrive. This would give you 8 ratios. I'm thinking about this myself.
