Thinking about getting a 7.3 F550 to tow with

I'm thinking about stepping up in truck for the trailer we pull. We drag race and pull a lot of miles on our truck a year and travel long distances. The trailer is heavy. 53' extra tall with living quarters. Weighs over 22,000#. Been pulling with a 2006 Duramax 3500. Never been very happy with the truck. Had a few problems with it. My cousin has a 7.3 250 and has been a great truck.

So, the question is. Anybody know of any issues with the 7.3 F550s? Should we try to get an auto or manual? Anything to avoid? Any input would be apprciated.

I don't tow, but that sounds like one heck of a load. I think I would be looking for something bigger and more powerful. I could be wrong though.

If you are set on the 7.3L, you will want the ZF6 Manual on a '99-'03 truck.

You'll need to check the weight limits, I think with that caliber of trailer you may require a later model truck, or an F550 with a later power train (6.0L, 6.4L or 6.7L). You're talking a truck rated at least 32K GCWR, none of the 7.3Ls came that equipped. (Memory serves, the max of those F550s was 30K with 4.88 gears)

To add to this if you do go the manual route you will want a clutch upgrade

Surely a F550 can handle the weight. Remember, we have been using a 06 1 ton duramax for several seasons. It doesn't do that bad. Was just thinking about stepping up in truck. I know of several people that use F350 7.3 trucks to pull these trailers. I'm wondering if the truck I am asking about has any common or typical problems I should consider.

The company I used to work for had an 02 F550 crew cab dump truck on it with 400k miles. It towed a 32' gooseneck with a bob cat track hoe and a cement mixer on it, among other things, probably 390k out of the 400k. It never had any major issues other than your typical maintenance items. The fuel tank delaminated and messed some stuff up. However if I was you I would probably be looking for an 08-10 F450 with 4:88's and a DPF delete and tuner.

I have a f550 it has the 6.0.. Great truck, Pulls anything you put behind it. Grossed out one day at 28,000 pounds and didnt have any issues. Didnt like the hills very much but it pulled it.
