2010 F450

I intend to purchase a 42.5 ft toyhauler that weighs 18000 loaded, 14K empty. I have looked around and the F450 is the only truck of normal size that can handle the weight legally. I want to add an additional 109 gal of fuel to the bed of the truck for extended towing distance. I will be under the max weight of the trucks towing and weight capability. I want to be absolutely legal due to traveling to multiple states don't need any highway trooper issues. What can I do to this truck to boost horse power and fuel economy without voiding my factory warranty and what mpg can I plan on getting. Am I screwed and have to leave it stock and just pay the gas bill? Any help or info will be greatly appreciated. Chip

F450 and economy don't go together in the same sentence .. LOL

pulling that much weight I don't think you can do a whole lot to get mileage

Isn't the DPF required on the vehicle inorder to be legal in all 48 states. I know if I delete it I'll gain a ton of mpg and hp but it isn't legal on the highway, correct.

Better yet, I think it's a moot point because if the OP is looking to get a diesel, he's SOL unless he purchases an existing stock unit. That said, $10,000 will buy A LOT of gasoline for a V10, or wait until around the spring of 2010 for the 6.7L Scorpion engine to debut.

I would say you need to find a mod friendly dealer. I know being in Texas there are several. With that said another thing is depending on the dealer if you buy from them they will warranty it regardless just to keep your business. Atleast thats my experience with warranty work.

One thing to check is the amount of fuel you can carry on board. Some states have restrictions on how much total fuel you can have on board. With 109gals in the bed + what's in the tank below, you may be close. I don't know what Arizona's limit is.

I know the 6.4L is difference than my 7.3L, but when I tow my 12K 5er, I get between 10-12 mpg when towing depending on terrain mix to and from our destination.

Chiper 25,

You may want to wait just a few months for the new 6.7 Scorpion to come out. The power out put is quite a bit more with better fuel economy along with a better design by far. Read this article .... Report: 2011 Ford Super Duty to Get New 6.7-Liter Power Stroke V8 : Auto News
