rear end doesnt look right any ideas???

Going to pick up a camper this weekend, so im doing some yearly maintnance.
Changing gear lube in the the rear end and found scratches on the carrier next to the ring gear. Not deep gouges, but I could catch my fingernail on the tip of them, probly 30 of them, all the exact same size and depth. didnt find any piecs of steel, but there were definately shavings. Couldnt upload any of my pics i took of it cause they were to big i guess. but it looked like they came from the pinion gear, because it is the only moving part that gets close to the carrier. Is it possible that the pinion gear slid forward and is rubbing on the carrier??? I cant get my big monkey paws back there to feel around. Can I keep drivin it???? and start lookin for a junkyard rear end or should i park her till its fixed?
