Smile Didn't do much at all last night...

Ok Symbols, here it is....

Last night I got the chip installed in about 2 hours, I was doing it in the parking lot of my apartment instead of heading over to a friends garage, so it went a bit slower due to tool hunting and being extra worried and thus cautios.

Anyhow, I was anxious to see if I screwed anything up (my only real worry was when I pushed the PCM back into its rails under the dash... worried I was pushing on the chip because of where it sticks out and it took some effort...) so I decided to take it for a spin just outside of town.

I started it up in stock, and the very first thing I thought was "Wow, this is a lot quieter than before!"

I drove around in my stock tune first, it seemed to me that my stock was a bit different than what my truck had before, just felt like it shifted a little more aggressively, and when I got on it, the EGTs would hit almost 1000, whereas before I could only hit 850 when spooled out. Perhaps because my original (true) stock was for an early 99 whereas jody might use a later "stock" tune... I don't know, I am only speculating.

That being said, I then switched through each of my programs: my 40hp Tow and 80hp Tow performed great and were pretty much what I expected.

Then I tried my 80hp Econo, Jody was not kidding when he said it has a lot of power! I am actually not yet sure I am going to get used to how sensitive my pedal is, it feels like driving a sports car instead of a big rumbling truck... I went over a speed bump in my parking lot and the bump caused my pedal foot to bounce a tiny bit and I just about chirped the rear tires as a result... amazed me at how responsive it now is.

Anyhow, it was then time for a quick open road test: this is the great part about living in alaska -- open roads and lots of mountains all less than 5 minutes away

I took it up in the hills and the first thing I noticed is that I was easily hitting 1100 on my EGT's. I had to be super careful not to go too hard, managed to never see higher than 1150, but only because I was good about backing off the pedal. I suspect that this is because I must have a boost leak, so will be looking into that tomorrow night (tonight is dedicated to rebuilding a boat motor of mine and tuning it for spring fishing season) I plan to search the forums tonight for boost leaks and high egts as I know I have seen plenty of those threads and really don't care to start another one if not warranted. If anyone has a link to a diagram of my turbo system (early 99) though it would be TREMENDOUSLY appreciated (PM me)! I would like to know where the suspects are and make sure I don't accidentally skip a boot.

I put it in 120hp race once, decided that is an off limits tune until I have $4k-$5k saved up for a replacement tranny. I punched it hard once from a slow roll (maybe 5 or 10 mph) and the shifting was very aggressive, so much so that I heard and felt a loud thump around 45-50 (torque converter lockup I suspect -- confirming with Jody currently) that caused the truck to pick up even faster... I have a 6000 mile trip to Minnesota and back coming up in about a month, and I cannot afford to smoke my tranny, so no pushing too hard for now.

All in all, very delighted with the chip, just need to sort out the high egts which are by no means the chips fault and all will be good.

1100*-1150* is nothing to worry about

Do you have a boost gauge? If so, what kind of numbers were you seeing?

Hijacked

Hey guys, I am starting to feel like I am hijacking my own thread here, so I am moving the discussion about my truck's issues to another thread High EGTs Suspect Boost Leak?where I have answered your above questions and am leaving this one to discuss my shopping experience with Jody. Thanks and sorry for the redirect.

Jody has my chip again right now too. Looking forward to getting it back friday probably. I just talked to him and Diane today, they got me fixed up again and it's on it's way back to me. Can't wait to get it back in the truck. They really are a class act, and are awesome people to deal with Nothing but good experiences with them, and nothing but good things to say about them.
