Diesel troubles

Having problems with my 2002 f250 7.3, running crappy. I was exiting the freeway and it starts choking like its gonna die then finally does at the light. Couldn't get it started again for 15 min. Then just drove it straight home. I thought it was over heating. Next day I try to drive and and 4 miles later it does the same thing and won't start now. Pushin a little white smoke out of the exhaust pipe but not too too much. Always did a little, just more than usual now. ive been wanting to get that checked out. Any one ever have this problem? And what they think it could be?
