Gear selector locked up

I have a 2004 Excursion XLT, 2 wheel drive. I moved it out of my garage this weekend and put it in park. Left it running, got back in a couple of minutes later and could not get it out of park. I fooled around with the tilt wheel, turned the wheel, shut it off...nothing would work. I finally pushed the brake pedal as much as I could and it would shift out of park. Is there a safety switch somewhere that wont allow shifting with out your foot on the break?, if so, is there an adjustment that can be done to correct this problem?
