Question 7.3 hard starts long cranking

I have a 2001 7.3 diesel with over 99,000. It usually cranks over a few times and fires right up. It started taking longer to start and has got worse over time. Doesn't matter what the outside temp is or if the engine is cold or warm. If I start it right after shutting it down it starts up better. Batteries are good and it cranks over pretty fast. At first I noticed if the tank was full it didn't start as hard. When it got down below a half tank it started hard again. Now it is so bad it starts hard no matter how much fuel is in the tank. Acts like the fuel is draining back into the tank. I really have no idea what it could be. I thought this forum might have some ideas to narrow down my search for the problem.
I'm new to the group and want to thank everyone, in advance, for a great site.

sounds pretty tale tale of a FICM problem. check out youtube for videos of how to check the voltage out put. anything less than 47 volts and its bad. theres definatly other things it could be, but those are common symptoms of a bad FICM( fuel injector control module)

I may be incorrect but a FICM is a 6.0 problem not a 7.3 problem.
Sounds like a fuel drain back problem, did this start after a pm? Just to be sure swap gaskets, and fuel filter make sure to use a new style cap on the fuel filter housing. the old ones get hairline cracks. Buy the fuel filter wrench it will save you heartbreak later.
also check the water drain off o rings also cause this.

Yes, ficm are only in 6.0s.

Do the fuel filter o ring check, and change ff if its nasty. Also, do you get a ses light at any time? Most of the time it's fuel related if no ses lite is present.
How is the oil level in the truck? Check to make sure it's up to correct level.
Ultimately you would need to get it on a good scanner and check injection control pressure while cranking, and running.
Easy way to check fuel drain back is take the cap off and look to see if its full. Could be low fuel pressure. Need to check that too. Also, check the hpop resivior to make sure it's not low on oil, there's an Allen head cap on top right in front of the fuel filter. Should see oil near the top.
