Cool egr valve or egr cooler.oilcooler...f350/6.0L

i have f350 6.0 L 2005 diesel that has always ran with temp @halfway mark. recently started smoking(white) at 1/4 temp mark and stopped at halfway temp mark. losing water in coolant system slowly(20 miles a day, fill once a week maybe). got hot, gauge climbed almost to red once, but stopped to let cool right then and the gauge would drop if rolling fast with engine idling. hard to start one time and black liquid(soot/water) out muffler a few times. could this be the egr valve or egrcooler,oilcooler,etc......

thanks for any help....
johnny

You have a bad oil cooler, which has lead to a bad EGR cooler. Time to stop driving the truck until you can get everything organized for a repair, and that includes the time to learn everything you can about what happened here and ways to prevent it.

I had the same thing, looks like its time to start reading up on the 6.0L and getting it figured out. Here's my write up:
Write Up: Bullet-Proofing the 6.0L PSD.

I'm agreeing with colo-dually on this one. I haven't been through it myself, but I bet the oil cooler caused the xcessive temps in the EGR cooler which resulted in the failure. Do not simply change the EGR and continue to drive it.

It sounds like you're one of the lucky ones that caught it before the major damage occured. There are many threads on here about monitors; scangauge, insight, etc. That will allow you to monitor those temps and catch that before it ruptures. I haven't bought mine yet, but will be doing so very soon. There's some good people on here with great advice!

How many miles on the truck?
