Fuel Problem?

Have '01 F250 7.3 crew cab short bed 4x4, 242,000 mi. Was low on fuel, engine warm running 70mph on fwy, began running rough and losing power before finally dieing. Started after a few minutes, but rough and no power. Limped to off ramp and died again on downhill. After about ten minutes was able to start and drive home with everything running normal. When I started it again to move to driveway, running rough again. Checked fuel filter, no water, clean filter. Changed anyway. Added 5 gal. fuel from jerry can and it is running normal for 50 miles so far. No code indicators or low fuel warning light. Are these symptoms of running out of fuel?
Was reading about under valve cover harness problems. How intermittent can the rough running be?
