black smoke in 04 f350 6.0 liter

I got a 04 powerstroke 6.0 with a k&n intake ppe accelerater programmer
Set on 8 and at times when you mash the throttle it blows lots of
Black soot then other times nothing why is it a hit it miss with the smoke
