Concealed Carry on Campus

Since there are a lot of college students and parents/friends/relatives of college students on here I thought it would be a good time to let everyone know about a group that I’m a member of that is fighting to give CHL holders the right to carry on college campuses. Students for Concealed Carry on Campus is a national grassroots organization that was created the day after the Virginia Tech shooting. They currently have over 37,000 members. Here’s their site: Students for Concealed Carry on Campus - ConcealedCampus.org

Right now is a really important time because there is concealed carry on campus legislation being introduced in 9 states (Arkansas, Arizona, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia). Utah is the only state that requires all of its public universities to allow CHL holders to carry on campus. The Texas legislation looks like it has a really good shot at being the first to join Utah- the bills are co-authored by a third of the Texas House and Senate and have the support of the NRA, TSRA, and the House Law Enforcement Committee.

I’m currently working with some people here at Texas A&M to get our chapter recognized by the university but it’s a long process and we’re hoping that by the time we’re approved, the legislation will have passed and there will be no need for us. There are other campus chapters all over in every state. You can find your campus leader on the website and if your campus doesn’t have one, you can contact SCCC about becoming the campus leader for your school. Most campuses also have Facebook groups and there are a national and several state groups.

Good News for sure, and good for you with all the effort you are putting in. I think its only fitting that a permit holder be allowed to carry on campus,ESPECIALLY with recent events.

Thanks! The hardest part is trying to convince people who know absolutely nothing about guns or concealed carry that this is a good idea. The most common argument I've run into has been "I won't feel safe knowing that the person sitting next to me in class might be carrying a gun." They don't care that the person sitting next to them in the movie theater off campus might be carrying. They also don't care about whether or not they really are safe. All they care about is "feeling" safe.

Yay! I've emailed mine too. This was the first issue that I ever emailed anyone about. Actually, the first person I emailed was Senator Wentworth to thank him for proposing the bill because he took a lot of heat for it and it was nice to know that finally a politician was looking beyond emotions and at the facts.

Luckily I'm at Colorado State University and we are already allowed to carry. I think it's a great thing to have.

I have my CHL and during the certification class, they were explicit on where you can and cannot carry. Courthouses, banks, places that have 51% or more of their sales from alcohol and a few others. Unless there is a specific sign posted w/ specific size font, no other place can keep you from carrying your gun.
Several years ago, I worked for a company that had a no gun policy but they did not post the state approved sign saying that you cannot carry there...so I took mine to work with me every day.
Do the campuses have the signs posted? Did I miss something during the training that I'm doing wrong or was the instructor wrong?

You gotta love Utah!!! Me and my wife both have permits. I think the feds should pass a bill that says that everyone 18 years and older must own, carry, and be trained in proper handgun safety. Now that would be a safe place to live.
