Problem with HP DVD Writer 840x dual layer burner
I never thought I'd be asking this type of question on this board, but here goes. I've got a serious problem with my CD/DVD burner.
Every time I try to burn a DVD, the drive burns approximately 60% of a 4.7GB blank disc and then Nero crashes with the following error: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I/O Error! Device: [0:1:0] HP DVD Writer 840x S632(D: )(ATA) ScsiStatus: 0x02 Interpretation: Check Condition CDB: 2A 00 00 14 3E 20 00 00 20 00 Interpretation: Write(10)-Sectors: 1326624-1326655 Sense Area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 0E 00 00 00 00 80 04 00 00 00 00 Interpretation: Unknown (Vendor Unique)(0x80,0x04) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I've had the same problem trying to backup different movies. I made sure I had up to date firmware and Nero software (ver 6.6.1.4). Originally, the burner was attached as the master on the secondary IDE controller. Moved to slave drive on the primary IDE controller using different cable. Changed brand of media used from Ridata to Iomega. Ran complete virus scans with Avast. Have Spybot search and destroy running resident, but ran a full scan with Spybot followed by a full scan using Adaware. Tried using Window XP "restore points" to fix it, but no change. Restored the entire C: drive three times, using different backups ranging back two months. After restoring harddrive, tried using then existing Nero software followed by software update and retry. Nothing has worked, so far. Drive has begun not recognizing commercial CDs or DVDs installed to play. Reinstalled "old" DVD burner (NEC ND-1100A) and the problem continues. It worked fine with Nero 6.6.x.x since Aug '06, until this mess. I've got the system (Dell 8250) on an UPS. I am constantly updating all of my software, especially Spybot, Adaware and Avast!. About two weeks before the problem, I added a Belkin wireless 802.11g router. But, that's it. Am I in the ballpark to suspect either the power supply or the motherboard? try updating nero, or use something else better yet.
i would also try reinstalling the software for the burner. if it worked before, it should work again. |

The version of Nero that was installed (6.6.1.4) is the most up-to-date version. I uninstalled Nero 6.6 and reinstalled my old version, Nero 5.5. The 6.6 came with the new (in Aug 06) HP dual layer DVD burner. Anyway, I had the same problems. This is getting fairly expensive. I've already turned 10 DVD+Rs into coasters. I tried swapping the power cable from a hard drive to the DVD burner too. That didn't work, either. When I restored the hard drive from a backup, I didn't format the hard drive before restoring. Could Nero, or some "bug", have set a flag somewhere that is perpetuating this? One that doesn't get overwritten with a restore?

Fixed???
I tried again, using ImgBurn (my old version of Roxio is too old to work with my DVD burner, HP DVD Writer 840x). I got this error message after about 61% of the image was burned.

I deleted the drive's channel using <My Computer>, <Properties>, <Device Manager>. Rebooted the PC. Windows XP "found" and installed "new hardware". I did that to make sure that the DMA access hadn't been messed up. That didn't seem to help. This morning, and I've lost track of how long this has taken, I cleaned the laser lens (again), used different media (Memorex DVD-R), and tried to write using ImgBurn at 4x speed (rather that "Maximum".) The drive is supposed to be happy with either DVD+R, etc., or DVD-R, etc., and has worked well before using DVD+R. IT WORKED!! Now, I just have to figure out what specific "fix" actually fixed it. Or, if it's not fixed and this successful burn was just a fluke. Then I can go do an oil & filter change on my truck, which is where I'd rather be right now.
