Comp Geek/Stereo/AV Person Question

I've got my Avic and it's got the AUX port on the front that I use for my BlackBerry for - basically like an IPod. Anyway, it works bad azz.
BUT my question is - IS there an adapter to go from a that AUX port to a USB DRIVE?
Clear as mud I'm sure. I want to take a USB thumb drive and plug it into my Avic AUX port. Does such a cable or adapter exist? My wife went to Radio Shack for me the other day and the guy there treated her like she was stupid - but that's why he works at Radio Shack and I run the IT Infrastructure department for the largest engineering company in the worlds largest office, so he can F off for treating my wife like that.
Off my soap box - does anyone know of one? If not someone needs to build one and become a bazillionaire.

as far as I am aware, nothing like that exists. USB requires power which the aux output on you radio would not put out, so an adapter would be worthless anyway. I think you are SOL, but maybe I might be wrong.

Your right...it would be a good idea. To add to that idea...imagine a little box
that will accept miscellaneous memory cards, usb drives (powered by 12 volts) that would enable you to play videos or mp3's into standard rca jacks and video jacks. You could use on your amp at home or on the road. The technology already exists but the packaging is not there yet...

(check out sony VRD-mc5 it consolidates usb,mem stick,sd memory,dv cable,s video cable, audio cables , but outputs to DVD only..its a 12 volt device also...I think it uses a linux engine.

You could do what you want to do with a simple 300-350 dollar netbook also!

This is what I'm looking for = sorta

I bet if I put a Vm on that AUX port it's got enough power to power a USB thumb drive. If not a simple thing like this with a watch battery would suffice.

Just thinking - it should be easy to build if it doesn't exist......

Watch batt will die quickly. How are you going to translate the signal from usb to aux?

Without getting real technical about it, files on a usb stick are in data format, so if the radio does not have the software to read it, its useless. AUX is for CD players, MP3, Ipod's, etc. A device that has capabilities off converting data files to playable music. Its not just about getting the correct adapter, its having a radio, LIKE MICROSOFT SYNC, that will recognize the file type. Hope this makes sense

When you say data format is that true? If I have my BB full of MP3's and the stereo reads it in that format because it recognizes that format - which you can call a data format - it will read it from a USB as well I would think.

Again - no arguing here just brain storming.

The file type is the same - keep in mind. Its the media that is the question here.
