screen problem

On Monday, I used my laptop, and it the battery went dead, and it died. No big deal, I plugged it in, and an hour later I turned it on, and now the screen looks grey. It's lit, but there's no image. I can hear it opening up, so I know it's just a screen issue, but I don't know what to do. Is it just bad? that seems odd that it was that instant. thanks in advance
