Question New Laptop - Mac or Windows 8?

I'm ready for a new laptop and having a hard time deciding which route I want to go. I'm not a gamer and plan on using the laptop to:

Surf the internet
Edit pictures and videos
Manage music downloads (iPhone5 and the future laptop)
Watch movies (either directly on the laptop or connected to a TV)
Run AutoEnginuity software
Other basic stuff (gmail, Microsoft Word / Excel / Powerpoint, Adobe, etc)

This machine will essentially serve duty as a desktop so I'm not concerned about it being uber-portable. I also don't want to miss out on any of the latest and greatest features available Meaning I'd hate to buy a Mac and find out I couldn't do something with it that I could do with a Windows based PC or vice-versa.

Bear with me as I'm a knuckle dragger when it comes to computers. However, I'm willing to invest to ensure my machine isn't obsolete in a few years.

So what do you recommend and why? And is Windows 8 as bad as everyone says?

This is the one I'm considering

Series 7 17.3

The 15" Macbook Pro is out of the question at $2,200.

I just got a new laptop with win8 and it took some getting used to. The win8 uses applications and it is best to have touchscreen for the programming. I do not have touch screen on mine and have to use the mousepad in weird motions.

The win8 uses win7(desktop) at the same time and it hard to remember what's open half the time

Sounds exactly like what I've been hearing. Is it bad enough that you wish you would have bought something else?

That SOB is over $2000.

What makes it better than a Windows based OS?

Everything makes it better. You can buy a MBP (laptop) for $1199. They don't crash, they aren't susceptible to virus's like Windows OS is. They are more secure. They last longer and stay just as fast as they were the day you took it out of the box. For instance our first MBP we got in 2009 and today with 4 years of time of use it is just as fast today as the day we got it. We just recently got another NEW MBP and LOVE it as well. They really are in a league of their own.

MacBook Pro. I made the switch from windows for years to a Mac 2 years ago. Not once have I gotten spyware or a virus. On a windows machine it seemed I got some kind of spyware attack or a virus 3-5 times a month. Apple makes high quality products.
