It was a pretty good run. I mostly went out to test my GPS. I got a free GPS Receiver from a guy at work and some free software. The software was a bust, but the receiver works pretty good. I'm using some free software from the internet called RoadNav. I had to do a little configuring and about 24 hours of DLing maps and building the maps for the software (Computer did it all automatically...I just had to sit there, choose the maps I wanted, and wait for the processes to finish.) I found a lot of AP (access points) that were open and ready for me to get on the internet. I'll go through and see exactly how many. I used an open access point at a gas station (didn't want to get into trouble) and asked if I could use it. Now all I need is some BlueStumbler software like NetStumbler. The only thing that I didn't like is where I had my laptop. It was sitting on the center console the whole time. I'm going to fab up a mount with a table so that it will be more secure and a little easier to see, and out of the way. (I'm home now BTW.)

Yeah...the ones you can buy are really expencive....like $150+ (some are like $400!!!!) I'm just going to make my own out of some plexi-glass, some pipe, and some 1" box tubing (to mount to the seat bolts). I'm going to try and make it all to where I don't have to drill or weld, and so where I can take it out if I need to. Would also be nice to swivel it so the G/F can use it on trips and whatnot.

I took another 'road test' this morning and I learned a few things about my programs: 1. For the computer to read the GPS receiver, I have to have the receiver plugged in BEFORE I turn on the computer. 2. For RoadNav (my mapping software) to see the Receiver, I have to start RoadNav FIRST! No exceptions. 3. For the GPS to be read at all, I have to have the batteries in or both the power cord and the batteries. The powerport on the GPS Receiver that I have in the truck (a standard 12 to Multiple voltage DC power converter) is not sufficient. The power cord is giving power to the receiver, but for soem reason it doesn't work w/out the batteries. 4. For some unknown reason, NetStumbler is not seeing my GPS reciever. At first I thought it was a settings issue, and it was...I didn't have the correct port selected for NetStumbler to look at. But it still shows an error reading the port (COM1). I tried all the possible configurations, and still nothing. I need to do MORE testing. (I've been testing all morning.) 5. While loading maps, I have to DL only one county at a time...any more and RoadNav locks up on me. (Thinking if I had more RAM, I could get it to work.) 6. The software for my WiFi dongle is almost as good at finding access points as Net Stumbler. 7. The WiFi dongle is pretty sensitive. I can pick up networks from about 50 yards away, using only the internal antenna in the dongle. I'll get some additional testing done today. I'm also trying to get my BlueTooth dongle to NOT turn on and off every minute. It's making my cellphone beep when it connects and disconnects. I might just end up turning the Bluetooth off on the phone and pulling the BT dongle out of the USB until I need it...if I can't get it to work right. Pics are to come shortly!!! |
