disk read error

i need some help. when i turn on my desktop it says disk read error. anyone have any ideas on how to fix this. im on my laptop right now. thanks in advance for any help.

Hit F8 (repeatedly) when it boots up and try to run in safemode, if that doesn't work your computer should have came with a fix-it disk, hit F8 and boot from the disk and try to repair.

Your hard drive may just be totally fried.
