Apple all the way.
I bought my wife a power book g4 back in 2005 and it is still going strong no problems at all. and after a few good years from hers I bought myself a macbook in 2007 and have only had an issue with the hard drive, (prolly my fault) I use it for school writing papers and such music movies pics and surfing the web. the only thing is wont do is data bases which I don't need on a personal computer. now as stated be for they a pricey but like most things these days you get what you pay for most of the time.

im gonna buck the dell trend as well...

i bought a dell xps m1330 dam near 3 years ago now. i DID have issues with the video card and motherboard a year ago, but i also bought the warranty from day one so it was all replaced free.

battery on the other hand needs replaced. i simply refuse to buy a battery so i just keep her plugged in...

overall, shes been a GREAT laptop. i bought the 1330 because how light she is overall, as i do a lot of traveling with her in my carry-on.

if money is an issue, grab an IBM thinkpad off ebay for 300 bucks. my entire family swears by em!

IBM thinkpads are very nice, I have a few, but they are very expensive new. They are bulletproof though, kid proof too.

I have a 4 year old Toshiba satellite with XP which snaps onto a RAM in cab desktop. Been bounced all over the states/Canada and still going strong. Use a 100W plug in inverter to power it in the truck with a Verizon air card. Mircosoft Seven is now available and is supposed to address some of the Vista problems. I had bought this one thru Walmart as it was cheaper and had a cheaper additional warranty. Next one will also be a Tobie

I <3 my macbook compared to my dell.

Does it have to have windows? I have office for mac, and if you need windows you can run it in bootcamp.

Nice thing about the new Mac O/S is that you can run them on almost any newer computer w/o any problems and sometimes better than a mac can. I have a dual boot tower that runs mac o/s 10.4 faster than my friends mac and works better than winxp all the time. It does take a lot to get used to if you have used windows all your life. The software can be more expensive for macs as well.
