Ultimate man camper?

I saw one of these in town yesterday, remembered the name and looked it up on line.Imagine a power company line truck made into an RV. It's a F550 4x4 self contained camper.225,000 to 300,000 dollar tab tho, Looks cool as hell, no wimpy circus tent awnings, and macho with a touch of style! EarthRoamer Home Page

More incredible to me that companies build these is that there are enough people buying them to keep the makers in business but they are fun to look at.
What I can't understand though is how they can stay together 'offroad' with the frame flexing, impact, expansion and stuff and then there is the little matter of fuel mileage.

mileage is offset by the 90 gal tank! at 4 bucks a gallon thats a hit at the pumps.I can't imagine the sound of a tree limb making a 20 foot scratch on a 300,000 dollar rig.Makes me cringe just to think about it.
I see them as eye candy, not for real world use.Wonder how many a year they sell?

Apparently enough to stay in business. What I would buy if I were able is a pre emissions version of the Dynamax Dynaquest ST 260 with the 260 hp MB in the Freightliner medium duty chasis-read flip over cab with in chasis engine work, it really makes alot of sense, especially the 14 or so mpg that several owners swear they are getting. I don't have a link but if anyone has a few minutes see if you can find it.

If someone is willing to spend that kind of money why not just buy a coach? Allot more room and same amount of money. It is nice eye candy though.

These modded F550's have been around for a few years from this joint, and I'm not bad mouthing them at all. You have to realistically look at what a rig that costs $300K, heavy as it is, is actually going to accomplish off road. These are stock F550 C&C's were talking about, not engineered off-road construction equipment. I would venture to say, buy a new F550 (maybe $60K) and get a Mobile Home (maybe another $60-80k worst case) and frankenstien something useful for that kind of cash. Or take it further and built a camper body for an F550. There's better ways to do that sort of project, leave that company for the Rich who have more money than common sense.

For an Ultimate Rig like that, I'd say build one at home off an F550 C&C or if I'm going big or going home, A Mercedes Uni-Mog. for those who are unfamiliar:
