Great info. Sounds like what we need here is a soot less tune, one that waits until the turbos have spooled before dumping more fuel in and one that cuts off when the pedal returns so there's no excessive smoke.

No worries Raul, I can make you an emmissions tune that won't smoke at all.

in california the emissions tune would only help you if your being pursued buy law enforcement and wanted to not soot when driving.if you go test your truck for the new smog testing coming up. it will fail if you have a chip in it.they do an obd functional test.that's why they are testing 98 and new vehicles.because that was when the diesels were a true obd2 system.

Well, glad I'm legally a resident of Texas. Looks like I'll be registering my truck there. Sorry guys!

My plan…

I have just been planning on registering my truck in Sierra County; the whole county doesn’t require any emissions testing. I don’t know how this will fly with the DMV, but it’s worth a shot. All that I know is that you need a physical address (provided by my In-Laws). Does anyone have any tips/ tricks I can use to make this work? Thanks!

Make sure your 'address of record' listed with DMV corresponds with the address used with your insurance carrier... The associated fees with registration/inspection for motor vehicles have become such a huge revenue source for your home state that they have become pretty savvy about cross-referrencing records and looking for inconsistencies (red flags). And yes, the DMV/RMV (whatever they call it where you live) is a state agency and, while not privy to the actual information contained therein, can compare notes with your state tax records for address verification. Sounds crazy but...

"So, Mr Smith, you took a deduction on your taxes for your primary residence in Anywhere, CA but you say you live in, and have a drivers license from, Someplace, NV... hmmmm... where DO you live anyway?"

Chances are overwhelmingly against you ever getting caught but remember - there is a proviso at the bottom of all the registration paperwork (and insurance) that says, in effect, "by signing this document I attest that all info contained is true and accurate blah blah blah". Insurance Co.'s love to find ANY reason not to pay a claim...

I was at a show on Sunday and one of the other owner's wife is a licenced smog tech - She said that this is mainly to make the state some more money. Wow, no surprise there!!! Apparently, she's gone to the workshop and heard the info above.

My truck is a Non-Catalyst truck so I asked her about my 4" turbo-back exhaust (No CARB E.O. #) - She says I shouldn't worry about it because it didn't change the 'function' of the exhaust, they probably won't look at it anyway - They're mainly concerned about the smoke.
