bigcountry, how could you possibly kill a racoon, they are a major part of our ecology. its our responsibilty not to disturb their habitat, and to make sure they can reproduce and go on their merry way!!!

they are a problem around here. i just shot one out my back window the other night... my dog was out on his chain and my mom was screaming. 3 of those guys were around him, after i hit the first one the rest ran. Had to call the police sence im in the city they dont take kindly to an ar15 going off. cops came and took it away in a garabge bag and asked to refrain from shooting. but i was in the right protecting my dog.

You know they make these things called air rifles. They make virtually no noise. They work great at taking care of creatures like this. Shoot up to 1,200 fps. Come in two different sizes .177, and .22. You need to clear a background check to purchase the .22 size though for some reason they treat that one like a .22 rifle.

I agree, get rid of them, I can't stand coons. I'm not treehugger or an extreme do-gooder by any means but I'm not going to drown anything, that's just wrong in my opinion. I have a Beeman .177 cal precision air rifle and yes, a round to the forehead does the job nicely. It shoots 1200 fps. They are dead before they hit the ground. However this rifle is actually louder than a 22 short or at least as loud, so I guess it'd be a toss-up if you're concerned about noise.

redpowersmoker speaking of them stealing shiny things. If anyone is a trapper and want a real cheap foot hold trap. Take a long that is down on the ground. Drill a 2 inch hole about 3 inches into the log. Then take a piece of tin foil ball it up. Place it in the hole. Then take two spikes and hammer them in on a 45 degree angle so they come through the hole.

When the coon finds the tin foil it will grab it and not let go. How this works is the coon can get his paw into the hole when it is an open paw. But when it grabs the tin foil it will have a fist and not be able to get its paw back out of the hole. The coon will not let go of that tin foil. The next day check the trap and be carrying a 22 rifle with you. Because when you find that coon with his paw stuck in the hole. You can just shoot him and when you do that he will let go of the tin foil and you will be able to get him free from the trap.

One tin foil ball is good for about a week.

my grandpa taught me to take care of nuisance animals accordingly. Problem pigeons off the roof with an air rifle, and a .410 shotgun deals nicely with a racoon.
