Just don't get caught! When I worked for my buddy's father-in-law's excavating company during the summers we used to get away with it, but we only used it in the pickups and never before a long (interstate highway) trip. If them durn revenooers catch ya yer cooked! State Troopers love to dip the tanks on commercial vehicles if they catch you out on the highway, but you can still get burned if you're in a pickup. I'm not sure how the penalty process works, but I've heard of fines into the thousands...not really worth the .20 or so cents a gallon you're saving on the road tax if you get nailed.
