So the final verdict is that the cubies are okay to collect hot WVO but the 5 gal plastic buckets aren't?

I know I'm being a PITA but I don't want to do something wrong and cost myself thousands of dollars in repairs because I tried to run contaminated WVO.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.....

I collect my oil in steel 3 and a half gallon pails. They are small enough to slide up under the drain spout of the fryer, and you can move them immediately after dumping hot oil in them. While the cubies will hold up to the hot oil, the plastic will become very soft and fragile until the oil cools down. However, if you can make the cubies work for you, do it. I have to rinse and dry my buckets for reuse, and the cubies you can just throw away.

At 250* a 4.4 gallon cubie will melt. Dont tell a cook hot oil will not melt a cubie. It will be all over the floor at temps over 250*.

No sire it will not. I poured oil over 300* into a cubie and it did not melt...it was still in the box so it regained its shape too. If you take it out of the box, it will likely loose all shape and become a mess.

Vegi oil is 7.62 lbs per gallon so a 35 lb. cubies is 4.6 gal. (Corn oil is 7.7 lbs/gal.)

I collected about 4 gallons of warm/hot to the touch oil in a home depot 5 gallon bucket with lid. I had the bucket held with a bungee cord on the side of my bed . The bucket did start to cave in where the bungee was holding it. After a 30 min drive home, it place the bucket in an area where it was about 80 degrees. After about 6 hours, it cooled down. The bucket didnt deform permanently. Its been sitting in a cool area, about 70 degrees, and hasnt leaked or had any sign of showing any problems.

When I picked up the oil, it was 7am sat morning. The oil was last used around 5pm friday and was left to sit overnight. It was still fairly warm/hot to the touch on sat morning. It was left to sit in the fryer though.

I plan on using this method for a couple restaurants instead of carrying a 55 gallon drum in the back as its much easier to move a 5 gallon bucket than a 55 gallon drum.

I've worked as a cook off and on for years, one time we had a guy dump hot (nearly 350 degree) oil into 5 gal pails. As soon as he lifted them up both bottoms came out in perfect circles. 8 or 9 gals of hot oil on the floor made for a fun cleanup.

I guess I'm lucky my guys put it back in the cubies for me and I just walk in and pick it up. FYI: Mexican restaurants are great sources for WVO. My guys cook mostly tortillas and a little carnitas in the oil. No frozen foods at all = less water.

Why not just recycle the cubbies? Instead maybe you can exchange them out with the restaurant old for new? Plastic an't so good to breath in when burned. Also not to great for air quality in general. Why burn waste veggie if its eco friendly but than burn the plastic it comes in? Honestly, enjoy cancer.
