There are a number of people doing Cold Up-Flow Settling, but John Galt seems to be the go-to-guy for Cold Up-Flow Settling.
I went one step further and installed a dip tube in my filter barrel so the pump draws oil from about 6" from the bottom, giving even more opportunity for settling.

I've pulled so much water that it's not even funny. I sometimes boil it out and end up with 2/3 oil and the rest evaporates.

Clay, I have a 250 gal plastic tank outside that I pump thru the shop wall where I have household water filter housings mounted up that dump into a plastic 55 gal drum with a spiket on the bottom. prior endevor. I purchased a 50 gallon electric hwh and a couple northern pumps like you recommended. one for backup. would there be anything wrong with plumbing " your" setup in schedule 40 pvc? My plans are to filter to 5 micron before hwh. overkill maybe. then go thru another set of household water filters w/ 5 and then 2micron after hwh while oil is still warm. Why do you wait til the oil is 100 degrees before moving? safety? thoughts? thanks, Scott

PVC would work well i believe, in fact i want to redo my unit because these hoses get old and hard and i have replaced them twice so PVC might be my next choice.
I settle the oil till it gets down to 100* because it is settling out particle matter and water while its cooling. This is the most effective, least expensive (free) way to clean the oil. Take a sample quart jar of oil, mix in some corn meal and a little water, shake it up. You will have an emulsion when your done. Heat the sample on the stove top till it reaches 150* and then remove the heat. See how long it takes till you see a visible layer of water and particle matter in the bottom of the jar. This will demonstrate the settling process in the HRH. So skip all that filtering your talking about and let gravity and heat do the work for you. Oh and water filters are not recommended.
