Most places already have a collection service!

I am just starting out in the WVO scene and trying to start on my supply. Today I went out, ate at a restaurant and popped the question to the owner. He said that the service that collects his waste oil pays him. After looking behind several restaurants everyone had a service. I called one and they said that usually they pay .23 cents per pound. So veg oil being approx. 7.7lbs/gal a 55 gal drum would pay about $97? How are you guys getting oil for free, or do you pay the owner? What do you say to get them to give it to you. Do all sources of WVO use a service? Thanks for any insight.

You are a couple years behind the free oil train. I believe that ship has sailed, at least for the time being.

All the talk in January was the Blenders credit......if fact, since the credit died, yellow grease has INCREASED on the comodity exchange, not decreased.

Here is the link to the comodity exchange/yellow grease market...

I dont believe that someone is paying $.23/lb. I bet $.23/gallon. Every restaurant has or once had a renderer collicting waste. Your best bet is start small, patronize your prospects (lunch, dinner, etc) and build a relationship. Ask for the opportunity to serv them and also PAY THEM.

Thanks for the link Veggin. Ive only seen the local Kansas city one. That explains why a company in Minn is setup in Kansas City and paying $0.04 per gallon under kansas city market for clean oil. They are taking it back to Minn where its $0.48 cents more per gallon.. If my math is correct.
Last week they were paying $2.51 a gallon. And I just scored 330 gallon free of mostly settled oil. I think im taking it to them today (friday). I wont get all $2.51 but the oil is fairly clean and dewatered. I dont have the time to centrifuge 330 gallons so im taking it as is.

My best advise is look for new restaurants opening. That is where half of my sources came from. Also little mom and pop places or smaller Chinese places. They usually throw it in the trash.
I had one Chinese place tell me "no no you need large buffet. we no have enough for you." They just took it and poured in the dumpster. Thanks ok. I spend money at most of the places i collect and i didn't like their food anyway. They shut down 1 year later too.

One thing ive been meaning to do is make up a contract. That way they cant drop you once you get their account.

Anyone have a contract with their sources?

I fashioned mine after this one......with some modifications.

Pay special attention to section #8. Add a spot after that one for the customer to initial. It means very little, but it would behouve one to not emphasize that one.

......Sorry fellas. I am not comfortable disclosing my actual agreement with anyone on the web.
