Angry Fines for running red fuel

I know from first hand experience about running red fuel. The IRS agents (Federal Agents) had set up a road block on a country road leading to a cattle sale barn. This was in the Great State of Arkansas. My father driving a 92 Dodge Cummins one ton truck was stopped at the road block. (only deisel vehicles were stopped). He was running red fuel in the truck and had just filled the tank. This did make it very easy for the them to pull a sample. Sure enough it was red. At that time they gave him a receipt for the fuel they pulled from his tank (not that they were going to pay for it, just to show they got it from his truck). He was then informed that the sample was going to the Lab and when it was analyzed he would receive either a fine or a letter stating it was clear(green). They also stated that if the sample was off-road fuel the revenue office of Arkansas would be notified and they also would send a fine. After about a month Dad received a notice from the IRS stating he owed them 1300 dollars for using off-road fuel in his on road vehicle. About a week later he received a fine from the State of Arkansas for the amount of 200 dollars. Seemed like a lot of money for 36 gallons. He was also informed in this letter that a second offense could result in a fine of 10,000 dollars. He has not run red fuel now since 1999.
I have not run it in my 95 F-250 power stroke since then either. Though I did have to run both tanks completly dry. That red dye is hard to get out of your tank.

After reading this thread, I see that now only the OTR truck drivers are harrassed about this. I don't get checked often, but the states that I have and I would watch are CA,AZ,TX,AR,LA,FL,NE,VA,MD,IA,&CT. In the last 7 years these states have checked me at least once. Most have had fuel check pionts set up. This is one law not worth cheating.

add montana to that list, as well as wyoming. Both of these states DO NOT care if you are OTR or private. If you have an in bed tank with a pumper there is a decent chance they WILL stick your truck. I actually dont think ive ever heard of a big rig sticked in montana without probable cause, but they dip private trucks any chance they get....

Go here: www.biodieselcommunity.org

Been making my own for a couple thousand miles now...net cost is ~$0.85 a gallon. Truck loves it, better for the environment than even the cleanest weenie hybrid, and makes sense politically. Go do it!

I'm new to diesel, and just happened upon this topic, and was curious what red-diesel is?
I've heard of bio-diesel, and people making their own diesel from waste oil from mcdonalds or something, but didn't know that there is a difference between diesel from a gas station and diesel that is used in farm machinery.

Red or dyed diesel is for off-road use only. Farm tractors, construction equipment, etc. anything basically that doesn't operate off the roads. The only difference is the road tax is removed from the price and the dye added so they can catch ya running it.
