B-20 Not Worth It

I have done lots of research on this site and have come to one conclusion for ME. I'm not suggesting that everyone should feel like this. In my hometown of Logan Utah we have a pump that currently serves B20 24/7 pay at the pump. However this diesel is more expensive (2cents) than straight up diesel from Flying J just down the road. Why mess with Bio when the you can't even save money on it. I don't want to risk anything, especially if I gotta pay more to do it.

I would however throw in B80 if it was available. It stays warm here in the summer.

Im right there with you bud. I researched some the other day and it was only about 5 cents cheaper then regular diesel. I wouldnt want to risk using either and plus they want us to be enviromentally friendly with the gas then why isnt it cheaper. plus it lessens the pretty black smoke that comes out.

Well

On one hand its a bit of america in the fuel but on the other hand you lose a bit of economy with it. It is totally safe to run in a 7.3 as long as you stay on top of your fuel filters and run an anti gelling additive in the cold weather.

I just can't justify even a slight risk without some sort of monatary reward.

PowerStroke bulletins and parts

Ford's Position on Biodiesel:
Ford is advising that any of their vehicles powered by a diesel engine, regardless of manufacturer, may exhibit engine or fuel system problems when using fuels with greater than 5% Biodiesel. Any problems when using fuels containing more than 5% Biodiesel should be referred to the fuel manufacturer. Ford only recomends using fuels containing no more than 5% Biodiesel (B5) in their diesel powered vehicles. In addition, as per World Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC) catagory 1-3, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) must meet EN14214 and ASTM D 6751 specifications. Broadcast Message 0884, 3626, 4942.
It is also recommended to change the oil using the severe duty schedule (3000 mile; no later than 5000 miles) and replace the fuel filter every other oil change (no later than 10,000 miles)

I've run as high as B-20 for extended periods of time without any problems.

I've run B-5 year round with not problems as well. I was only buying premium diesel, not the base level #2, and it was a winter blend in the cold weather months. I never saw a major negative affect on power or on economy.

The mainway you would see power loss or negative effects is if you have a clogged fuel filter

I run B100 year 'round, and know lots of people that do as well. We get it in houston from a commercial manufacturer for $2.36 a gallon. I only lost 1.5 mpg in town. At 50/50, I noticed the mpg came back.

The point everyone's missing is that the long term benefits are greater than the loss of mpg (which you wouldn't notice in B20). If we reduce Petroleum diesel consumption, and in turn lower demand, prices will eventually fall.

A 93Mil. Gallon Per Year plant is set to crank up in the fall in galena park, TX. This plant is being funded in part by big oil, and the Govt. plans to begin a mandatory B5 blend across the board by 2010. I will continue to use a minimum B50 blend in hopes that someday we can see a difference at the pump. Plus the truck runs quieter thanks to the lubricity of the fuel.
