For me the 18 speed is the best you can get I don't use them all but there there if you need them Keep with the double clutching till you get your licence (they mark down for not clutching every shift on the road test) and then it's clutch for first and reverse only after that (unless you screw up) Trust me you will be walking in circles if you always double clutch and its really hard on you knee

I'm not a truck but a mechanic on them, generally I prefer the splitters but the straight don't bother me either. I've never messed with an 18 speed so I don't know about shifting on those but the 13, 10, and 9's all seam fairly easy. I also agree on no truck shifts the same the old Ford LTL's you have to be right on top of your shifts where the newer trucks you have 1-1.5 second lag to get it in gear. Last when I took my class B test they didn't mark me down at all for not using the clutch but then again every state is different. I find it easier to shift medium and heavy duty trucks without the clutch anyway.

I like splitters but have learned to powershift and far enjoy it more then double clutching!

I agree powershifting being easier, & saves on the clutch...........but try powershifting with a REAL heavy load & see what it does.

My other day guy had an old Sterling with a straight 7 speed that I had to drive every 3 months to get a PM. I HATED driving that f'n thing. My Volvo has the 10 speed. I learned on a super 10 and am glad I don't have to use that everyday.

And don't even touch the clutch unless getting rolling from a stop. (After you're done with school, you have to do it right for the instructors.)

No, I hear you on not touching the clutch....just gotta do it until June 4(test) & then screw the clutch!

yeah, the 18 speed is the same as a 13 but you can split all the gears, not just the high side like the 13.

Here's a question I'm too afraid to ask my instructor because it sounds stupid, but here goes; Say you had a 9spd. You know how you can drop 2 or 3 gears when slowing down, right? Like if you were doing 55mph in 9th & you slow down to 30, you can drop to 6th. Is it possible, say if you were doing 55 in 9th & dropped down to 25mph, can you drop your splitter, shift into neutral, & throw it into 5th?

It might go, you'll just have to try it.

I barely touch the clutch pedal once I get rollling, but to each his own.

I do hear some drivers jump off the throttle so teh jake comes on and then they bang it into the next gear, it sounds cool, but in the long run, your hammering the rearend out of it.

Just take your time shifting.

I wish the truck I'm getting had a 13 or 18 in it but for the price I'm getting this truck at, I'll get by with the Super 10.

Ok, I've asked this question a thousand times and nobody has ever been able to tell me the answer but apparently I've been asking the wrong folks. What is double clutching?
