I used to be an engineer on commercial ships and worked on motors similar to this, not as big, but similar. Engines in this size can have up to 4 injectors per cylinder, one just can't inject enough fuel and cover the entire area of the combustion chamber. Also each cylinder will have it's own fuel pump, a fuel pump the size of a small car. Surprisingly these engines are very simple in concept and operation, they are just huge rotating masses. They are much simpler as far as electronics and controls than our lovely powerstrokes. Also engines in this size(low speed diesel) can often be completely reversed by the used of compressed air injected into the combustion chamber, the air stop the engine and forces it to rotate in the opposite direction, and also the air is used to start the engine as well. |
