mbe 4000 470 h.p.

hey all! quick question for anyone who has run with the benz 4000. How comparible are they to the s60 det. or C-15 cats? Looking at a 2000 western star with 72'' sleeper mbe4000 470 h.p. eng. w/13 o.d. trans and 3.93 ratio. is it a good combo. for hauling a 120,000 lb. load of pulp or not? just curious as to your opions. i an i a cat man myself and always have been but the price so far is right on this tractor @ $35,700.00 with all service and main. records w/ purchase. keep in mind any manufacturing problems with this series of engine are greatly appreciated. thanks for any input and happy holidays guys.

we've got the mbe 4000's in the sterlings at work, and they seem to do all right, but everyone i know absolutely hates them. I buddy of mine is a mechanic for Covington Detroit, the main detroit diesel shop/place, whatever you wanna call it, in north carolina, and he has absolutely NOTHING good to say about them. He says there junk, and he'll tell you exactly why. i dont remember the details unfortuantly, but he says most of the mercedes he's had come in, came in with MAJOR problems just out of warranty. if i happen to see him this weekend i'll try and get the exact details on why there so bad, but i dont know when the next time i see him will be, because it works in greensboro, which is like 3-4 hours away, and only comes back on the weekends. i hardly see him.

the one's at work have only got like 17000 miles on them tho, not anywhere close to being broke in yet, so they still have a ways to go i guess.

and there definitely no where near to par with series 60, or c15, IMHO.

just my 2 cents tho. hope it helps maybe.

i prefer cat myself.

I would walk away from an MBE 4000. I like cat or cummins better. Detroit as a last resort. The early 60 series was a good engine, but the newer ones are horrible.

Ya I decided after talking with a neighbor of mine about his mbe in his western star that they were not much. His warranty just expired and he has nothing but problems sense. thanks for input.
