Technologies like cylinder deactivation and gasoline direct injection are MUCH better investments than diesel cars.
This is a false statement. It is a different product, not a byproduct. The lack of gasoline buying and diesel going up well, its not quite the relationship you said. Gas skyrocketed and so did diesel. It wasn't a gas down and diesel up. Technologies we have not even considered or invented yet are the solution. If we had appropriate technology, the problem would be gone. If we keep getting these BS emissions mandates passed, we're not going to find the technology because we waste so much effort on meeting those standards. Nevermind making sure our cars are able to run on the 10% ethanol scam. Bring back real gasoline- that will help. Time for real innovation and thinking outside the box.

Diesel is a product of refining CRUDE oil into many fractions.
You are wrong about not being able to modify what the ratios are.The refineries have been modifying the ratio for many years thru hydro-cracking to name just one process.
The cost of diesel fuel went up do to the requirement of ultra low sulfer diesel
and due to massive speculation of ALL commodity markets...(even rice).
Diesel is more efficient than gasoline for TWO significant reasons. The first reason is that diesel fuel has 10 percent more energy. The second and most significant reason is that diesel can be used up to 30 percent leaner than gasoline.
There is NO advantage to cylinder deactivation that cannot be applied to diesels. The ONLY advantage to a gasoline engine is that you dont have to build the engine as sturdy.
