i was at a smog shop the other day getting my girlfriends car smogged and i asked the lady about what they were going to do about smogging diesels. she said they are already doing it. they can smog you while your driving down the road and she said the only way you know they are checking you is your rpm's will drop a little. she said they do it out of random cars so you will never know what to look for. that kinda worries me because my tunes dont exactly run to clean lol. let me know what you guys think.

How can they test your emissions while you're driving down the road???

In all seriousness though, I do remember from my transportation air quality engineering class that some places were experimenting with smog units on exit ramps, that would issue a fixit ticket similar to a redlight camera. Don't think anyone actually does it though. And of course there's been talk of OBD 3 or 4 over the years that reports a CEL to an office somewhere, but that never happened either.
