OK folks

We are seriously thinking of moving there when I retire. So here are a couple questions. What is the job market like for the wife? Schools I know dependent on the location. There is a VA hospital in Phoenix correct? What are utility prices like? I have more but that will work for now.

Job market has been crap (like everywhere else), but actually improving over the last 6 or so months. Yes, there is a VA hospital in Phoenix. It's downtown, but there are clinics around the Valley (it's what we call the Metro Phoenix area) and there's even a VA clinic in Surprise out where I live (link below). Oh and water/sewer prices and garbage/recycling are per city/municipality but are reasonable. Electricity is the biggie (mostly in the summer), but once you have been with the electric company for 12 months, you can get on the equalizer plan and it will average out your entire year's worth of electricity for one monthly payment.

PS. A heat pump is SOOOO much better than the baseboard heating we had when we were stationed in Washington. And even better than that is a natural gas furnace. I pay $60/mo to heat my house in winter when it's REALLY cold; I think I paid $300 for one month when we first moved in in Washington. After that, I bought a kerosene heater and lived with the stench or chopped wood for our fireplace.

So it is a definite we are picking up camp and moving to warmer climates. I personally can't wait for the heat.

Any Suggestions on neighborhoods?

So if I read the laws right if I live in Maricopa County I am subject to both a visual and a snap test inspection yearly of my emissions system. So once a year I have to throw my cat and EGR back in correct?

Oh and a detune of course. Now if I was to live outside of the county which I have zero idea how feasible that even is. I would be immune correct?

Yes, you would be immune, EXCEPT technically if you commute into Maricopa county then you would still be subjected to emissions testing although they have a tough time enforcing it. Two things: 1) that would be a BRUTAL commute and 2) right now, it appears to be all about the money. They want your $35 every year for the emissions test.

I have had VERY STRICT visual inspections in the past, but they can't ever find a reason to fail me and some of the testing stations are hit or miss.
