Coolant Flush and Additives

Greetings all........

I've read several hours this morning on the do's and don'ts of flushing and the different types of coolants and additives. It all boils down to prefenerce. For peace of mind, I'm going to stick with the green and do the SCA additive.

So my question on the flush.....Reading the Guru Gooch's flushing bible, I'm a little confused.....easily accomplished....he says to get the prestone flush kit and hook your garden hose and flush till the overflow bottle no longer shows green. If I'm flushing with the garden hose, when and how do I flush with the 20 gallons of distilled water???

His disclaimer about using tap water has me stumped as to why he suggests using the garden hose????

Is it really necessary to remove the thermostat?

I did mine yesterday, when I removed the thermostat I didn't put a gasket in. That helped, I didn't do the water hose flush. I just put the initial 6 gallons or so in until it started leaking out of the housing. Then started the truck & kept adding distilled water until I got to 12 gallons then drained it. Redid it a couple more times before adding my EC-1. It does get the water solution all over. I didn't use any commercial flush product just distilled water & caught all the extra.
