Looking at '01, check out this pic
I'm looking at an '01 Ex at a Ford dealer a little ways away. From the pics it looks very clean and totally stock but the discoloration on the compressor side of the turbo concerns me a little. I've owned other diesels, and the only time I've noticed the tan color was a rig that towed hard and heavily fueled. Does this look like anything to be concerned about? Again, the rig looks very clean aside from this.
Also, I've read about the doide problem with the '01 autos. I'm guessing this tranny has the diode in question, so I'm curious if it's a problem that can be fixed without a complete overhaul or do you run it until it totally craps out and overhaul the whole works? This Ex has about 90k on it. The dealer will get me a clue report on Monday, and allegedy has been serviced them by them also so I should be able to get a service history. Anything else I need to check out aside the normal things you look at on a used 4x4? |

Yeah, it looks awful clean, but then again, I clean under my hood every 3 months, and she gets cleaned including bottom blasting at least once a week. So it's either someone like me, or it's someone trying to hide something.
Then again, I used to do auto detailing, and we cleaned under the hood real good on every dealers car. So I'd do a close inspection, and take it from there. I personally see no difference between under my hood, and that one, besides the fact that I have an aftermarket intake. |

Good Luck! That kind of thing always makes a guy a little nervous. I know its an 01, but sometimes dealers will have a 30 day warrenty on used vehicles. Might be something to look into?

The discoloration on the compressor side of the turbo has nothing to do with heavy towing or heavily fueled.
That area is normally quite dirty, because thats where the Crank Case vent is(the area where it releases at), so that area gets covered in oil and fuel overtime. When not cleaned for a long period of time, its end up with the discoloation once it is cleaned, which is just a stain. Nothing to worry about |

I understand the dealer will completely detail anything that comes in it has 10k miles or 210k miles. I'll crawl all over it, but the tan color on the compressor housing tells me it's worked hard I think. Does everybody's housing look that color? edit- CoalRollin was typing as I was. Thanks for the info! Last edited by JLinder; 07-13-2008 at 09:32 AM. Reason: another post |
