bought my first excursion any advice

i bought my first ever ford but it happens to be a 02 7.3L excursion 4x4. i was wondering if there is any known problems i should look out for. she has 191k on the clock now and is completely stock. i have been looking at buying a tuner and muffler and i see alot of you guys do a home built intake which i will be researching tomorrow. i will be using this to tow my race truck and the horse trailers with so im only looking for towing and fuel economy upgrades. thanks for any and all advice.

The first thing I would do is change out the springs to the V/B mod. Then upgrade the transmission. Hold on...check ball joints and front end for wear first, then do the spring swap if all is ok with them. Welcome to owning the best SUV on the planet!

Buy a PHP Hydra chip and enjoy the ride. Also make sure you have a rear sway bar

For sure, talk to Cary, he knows his stuff... I spent some time on the phone with him the other day talking about lifting our Ex, very informative.

In general, the DIY intake/6637 filter is the first mod I do to a 7.3 when I get it, straight pipe the exhaust, get some gauges to monitor Boost, EGT, trans temp, then get a good chip. I'm a fan of DP Tuner, but others have also had good luck with the TS chips with custom tunes... Skip the cannned tunes, or things like Edge, bully dog, etc. Not worth the time and money, do it right.

I too recently purchased a EX. I have been debating on what to do about the exhaust. Magnaflow, MBRP, or straight pipe? Dieselcrawler how does the straight pipe sound on a 7.3 and how loud is it? The EX is my wifes daily driver so I don't want it too loud.

I wouldn't straight pipe a Excursion...would be loud!

I have a straight pipe on my ex and I think its perfect. With the windows up its still actually very quiet but when you put down the windows you get plenty of turbo whistle and exhaust sound. But thats just my 2 cents...

I have been looking at a MBRP 4" exhaust with a cat delete and a TS chip. but all that has to wait since it popped a code for torque converter performance. i think its the sensor in the pan. just havent had the time to do all the research i need to be sure its the part i need. im going to look into that intake mod today and see all of what i need to do it.
