front wheel bearing noise

My wife heard this sound and after I listened and took it the shop, I was told that the outer wheel bearing was goin bad, apparently it is a sealed bearing and needs to be replaced, the whole part is from the wheel studs out to the automatic locking hub. Any body heard of this before?? the bearing unit is about 400 bucks ouch

On 4x4 you have an outer and an inner bearing. The outer you are correct is a sealed bearing and part of the hub assembly. The inner is on the axle and oh so fun (in my opinion cause I love to smell the grease of the pinion... LOL) to change.

On a 4x2, you have a serviceable outer bearing.
