Should I trust the computer?

Ok...newbie here...excursion and ford. My question is should I trust the computer that tells me how many miles I have to empty? The freaking truck is almost to red and its hard to believe I have 147 more miles to empty. I am a gambling man but da ham. Also the mpg avg...how reliable is that? Thanks.

haha -- well, mine is pretty accurate -- but if ya have anything like tire size or a tuner that makes the computer readout off.

if its stock, I'd say believe it, ours will have the needle on E or past E, but the computer says we have about 10-15 miles when we finally filled up.

they are ok for a reference at times but I would not depend on them.

Hahahaha Yeah 147 on nearly red got me thinking wow it must have hyber options. I knew someone would get a kick out of the question/joke.

What would be the avg. range on a tank? I read some said 600 miles.

First, Welcome to the site.
2nd - I wouldn't trust the computer.
3rd - I figure my mileage by hand. I always reset my trip odometer upon filling up, and keep an eye on the miles ran. I know what my mileage is on average. I trust my odometer, along with my fuel gauge.
4th - I hate walking, or thumbing, to get fuel, so I am looking to fill up as the gauge drops below 1/4 tank .

Yeah..thats what I figured. Bigger tires, banks system...hard to believe the computer. 147 will always make me laugh from now on. I did notice my MPG went up 1.2 since the banks upgrade.

yah... your computer can't compensate for the bigger tires or the banks stuff -- it doesn't know that things have changed unless you change the inputs.

as for your tank, you have a nearly 40 gallon tank, so if you get 15 MPG -- 600 is close...

There is a wiki on another site on how to recalibrate the speedo yourself. The overhead is kind of close and with any chip or tuner turns into a lie-o-meter. I was suprised last week after the low fuel light came on. I got the over $100.00 clearance and it stopped at 40gal. I wish I didn't find that out. If I know theres 4gal there, I'm dumb enough keep driving.

Wiki...will check that out. I just leave the overhead at temp and compass now...atleast they will show me some correct infor. I dont wanna ever run out...we had a fire truck run out and man....it took the act of the diesel God to revive it.
