Odometer wont switch from trip miles

Hello all,

I just bought my first Excursion (2002 7.3).

My question is dealing with the digital odometer. It has trouble displaying the miles on the truck. It likes to stay on one of the "trip" modes. Sporadically I will push the trip/reset button and usually nothing happens, though sometimes it moves to the next "trip". And then to add to the confusion sometimes it will switch by it self over to the miles on the truck, but once I turn it off and back on the trip comes back up. Also when I hold down the trip/reset button it doesn't reset the trip to 0 either.

Any ideas or thoughts would be wonderful, before I take it to the stealership.
