i would love to know this as well. First one lasted two years and went out. So I bought one with a lifetime warranty. I was told since I have so many electrical devices in my truck it was shorting the life of my alt.

My charging system has been a little funny lately. The betteries were new 2/10 and I don't know the age of the alternator since I bought the truck used and there's no notes on the Oasis report about changing it. My battery light comes on intermittently and my scangauge II shows about 13.0-13.4 most of the time. At cold start in the morning it's very low, 11.6 and slowly comes up to about 12ishand stays there until the glow plugs turn off, then it jumps to 13.0 or so. I had the alternator tested at my local autozone and the guy said it should read around 14 as his tester showed 13.2.

I don't have the truck for a week as it is getting some damage repaired from a tire shredding on the highway so this is a perfect time for me to order an alternator. Should I simply assume it needs replacing and get a 6G from the above company?

From what I know it's just their nature. Takes more to get out the tools then actually changing it!
