Is my Transmission slipping ??????

Hello guys,

Here's my situation:

I am Active Duty Air Force and the job demands I travel a lot (2-3 weeks a month). That means our Excursion takes care of the family while I am away and Momma will not be happy if she gets stranded in the backs woods of Northern Louisiana.

I have a 2001 Excursion Limited 2 wheel drive with 7.3 PSD (170,000). Had it for about 2000 miles now. While taking the family to Forth Worth Stockyards the truck did something odd. I was merging onto the freeway (after the kids had to pee again) at 70 MPH when I noticed I had to speed up to get clear of traffic. I mashed the gas pedal (as done before) expecting the truck to downshift like it has done before then shift once I got a little more speed. Instead it down shifted pegged the RPM which caused the rev limiter to engage bogging down the engine. Truck was running fine at normal op temps. I immediately checked the tranny fluid to ensure it was not low. Tranny fluid had good color and was full.

Only happens when I give it “full pedal” at 70 mph. Slow pedal increase truck operates normal. Turbo seems to be operating fine.

My guess would be the filter in the trans needs to be changed, anyone ever have this happen to them? Thanks in advance for the input.

I have been practicing “Convoy Drills” with the wife and my 3 year old son (aka Mini Me) in case it does break down in the “back woods” .. LOL Exit vehicle … Secure area!!! Deploy Mini Me .. Go .. Go … Go …
