Before buying a diesel Excursion

I am seriously looking into buying a diesel Excursion, but I need to do some homework. I hear the 7.3 is virtually flawless but I like the idea of a 5 speed tranny in the 6.0. What is the deal with the following on the 6.0... Cold morning rough starts, EGR delete, and the head stud modification. Was the intial engine issues only with early model 6.0's? My family is out-growing our Suburban ( I know I need to get clipped), that is why I am looking into an excursion. Which engine can get the best fuel mileage. I am not looking to make a drag racer, but I am looking into a tuner and possibly exhaust.. Any help is appreciated.. Bruce

I'm a big fan of the 7.3! Couldnt give me a 6.0, but theres guys here that love the 6.0.
Someone will chime in, and give you some good advice to follow, other than just opinion.

I miss my Execrsion...even though it was a V10.

7.3 excursions are getting harder and harder to find all i can say is 7.3 is the way to go I dont like the idea of before I can play reliably to do headstuds and egr delete and to do studs they gotta lift the cab so they would lift the whole excursion off the frame

exs are alot harder to find a place to do head studs than and 250 cause there is alot more have to be lifted off instead of just the cab if i was you id get a 7.3 and intake ehaust and a custom tuned chip and you would be very well pleased

For what it's worth...I had an 04 F-250 with the 6.0. That thing was truely a POS. I bought it in Mar 07 and that day, the VGT solenoid went out, causing me to limp to the nearest dealer. Two weeks later, it was back in the shop for an EGR issue. I eventually sold the truck in Jan 08, because it spent about 4 months in the shop. I managed to sucker a dealership with the truck and traded it for an 05 F-150 KR while I went on the hunt for an Excursion with a 7.3.

I found that Excursion back in June, traded my wife's sport trac for it and have no intentions of getting rid of it until the frame rusts out from under me. The 7.3 is a much stronger motor and is a helluva lot more reliable that the 6.0. When my 6.0 was having issues, an IHC rep came down to the Ford dealer and told me outright that 1 of every 4 6.0's in 04 was a "bad" motor from the factory with nothing but EGR issues.

I wish my 02 Ex had the 5 speed Auto that the 04 6.0 has, but I'll take the 4 speed behind a 7.3 over the 6.0 any day.

Seems to be overwhelming support for the 7.3L. Well I too was in the same postion about 4 months ago in trying to decide what to buy. I talked to my best fried (who owns a Auto Repair business and his mechanics).

They all said the same thing. The 7.3L (if it has not been mis-treated it's whole life) is almost bullet proof. They did not like the 6.0's and told me to buy a 7.3L or skip all the way to 2008 (and of course there is no EX avaialbe after '05).

I think I'd like to have the 5 speed tranny and an 05 EX but not with the 6.0L. There are some '05's built during the first half of the year that still came with the 7.3L if you can find one buyt they will have the 4R100 trans.

Good Luck, D
