Possible 2 injectors intermitent
Ok guys, Im going to be as detailed as i can and include all information that i know of that could pertain to the problem im having so bear with me.
I have an early 99 f250 7.3 with the ZF-S6 transmission. The truck has 201,XXX miles on it and i did not experience any of these issues until about 200k. I changed the oil at 199K miles with the usual Scheaffers synthetic and the old oil analysis came back with normal readings.
The first thing i started to notice was on cold start ups the blue smoke, the colder the day the heavier the smoke but it would eventually clear up in a few minutes. I ignored it as its normal for these older diesels in our 0-30 degree winters. The second thing i noticed was about 2 weeks ago one day it started to take a lot of cranking before the engine would fire up (about 2-4 times longer cranking time than normal) I have not seen a pattern to the long starts, sometimes it fires right up warm or cold, sometimes lots of crank time warm or cold.
Now in the last couple of days (i put on 600 miles over the weekend and pulled a 2000lb trailer for 350 of them) the truck has run slightly rough at idle and still has blue smoke when it sits for a few hours at 60 degrees when its started but clears up in about a minute. the truck still shakes whether the truck is in gear with the clutch in or in neutral with the clutch in or out. The shaking is really bad when i accelerate between 1000-1200 rpm (like from a stop) and is also bad when cruising between those RPMs. once above those RPMs the truck seems to do fine.
For the performance and temp side of things I have not noticed a drop in power very much, especially above the 1200 RPM range the truck seems normal. However my EGT sensor is inserted to the drivers side exhaust manifold (pre turbo) and my EGT temps are very high compaired to before, getting on the 60 mph freeway trying to get up to speed i hit almost 1200 degrees where this was never the case before, at max i would hit 1000 before these issues. I still hit my normal boost pressure of about 25 psi like before and i did feel like the truck was low on power when pulling the trailer.
Suspecting a weak/failed injector i started the truck with a temp gun to monitor the exhaust ports to find a cold one. 6 of the cylinders were the same temps but the front 2 cylinders on the passenger side were quite a ways lower than the others. the others read about 200 (after some warm up time) where the other 2 adjacent front cylinders read about 140 each.
So now that im pointing to 2 possible injectors being bad (or unplugged/bad harnesses) before i pull the valve covers to verify the problem, should i have ordered a full set of injectors and just replace them all while i am in there? or should i have 2 ready to go in and wait for the others to go bad? Also this is my daily driver, should i park the truck immediatly and get it fixed before i drive it next and find another way to get around temporarily or can i limp it around until i have the parts in hand? my goal is to only have to take the valve cover(s) off once as i dont have a very good garage to do this in. I have the tools but just not a lot of space.
Any other tips or solution ideas would be appreciated.
Also i have a standard TS performance chip, issue is in all settings and still there when the chip is removed. And in case if someone is suspecting the driveline ujoints, they were replaced about 10K miles ago. Oh and about the fuel, 90% of the time i fuel up at the same place, i trust their fuel. this started to happen when i was using their fuel. However i do add about 5 gal of Jet A (with stanadyne additive) with almost every tank because i get it free from work. i have been running it since 180K miles, I have the airdog air separator system installed on this truck and i replaced that filter plus the above engine filter at 199K miles with the oil change. I have pre filters before the fuel goes into the truck as well and there is no water in the Jet A so i dont believe it was from fuel contamination.
