A/C Comp. cycling when A/C off in cab

High was in the 30s this afternoon, while pickup was warming i noticed the typical clicking in and off of the A/C compressor clutch like you would expect if the A/C was on. Got in cab and noticed selector was on defrost and temp was all the way hot, popped the hood and in fact it was the clutch kicking in and out on 60-90 second intervals. Had this pickup right at a year now and never noticed this before. Is it common for the a/c compressor to be engaging on and off while heater is on on these pickups?

Yes it is. The A/C compressor will cycle when in defrost mode. If you switch it to floor heat it will quit cycling. Suppose to work similar to a heat pump to keep inside of windows from frosting.
