Fuel Level Gauge

I have an 01 7.3 and today i was at about half a tank when i went into a store. I came back out of the store a few minutes later and turned the truck on and it said i had a full tank. Also my overhead console went from 231 miles till empty to 355. This is the 2nd time the truck has done this in the past week... Any ideas on what it could be?

I would guess that the fuel level sensor in the tank is on its way out. The incorrect reading from your tank causes the overhead to read incorrectly as well I would think. I could be wrong, but this is my first instinct.
