Heater Problem

My heater does not always blow hot. For instance monday i started the truck heater worked great, and it continues to work unless i shut the heater off. If it stays off for a few minutes it will blow cold unless i rev the engine to 3,000 rpms. Can rev it in neutral or when accelerating. After I rev it once the heater works perfect. Tuesday I started the truck and heater blew cold, revved the engine once and heater worked 200 miles to my destination.

For all the above instances I wait to make sure the engine is warm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well if you had a 6.0 Id say that you have a slipping water pump....I wonder if you might have air in the system?
