The gauge jus shows if the alternator is working. The light is probably coming on because the batts are getting old and not really holding a charge. Might wanna get them tested before they leave you on the side of the road or in front of your house going clickclicketyclickclick. My batterys went out with no warning. Got up one morning headed to work turn the key and nothing it wouldnt even go click click. Hope this helps.

found the prob.

well i tested the battries and one of them only has about 650 out of the 780 cold cranking amps and the nice tester i have at work( im a mechanic) tells me that the batt. needs to be replaced and that the alt. and starter are both good. so i guess its time for batt's. we carry exide and i can get them for around 120 for both.

fixed it

well after replacing both batt. and having the light still on, and testing the alt agin i came to the conclusion that the alt was junk. when i changed it out the term. on the back was all corroded up and crappy looking and i broke the term off. so its all fixed and the batt. were not a bad investment cause they were 5 years old anyway.
