Im not sure if it's common but my fuel guage never works properly either. Sometimes when i fill up it won't rise to full for a couple miles. Other times i will drive 100 miles until the guage even moves off of full. I ran out of gas and the guage said I had 1/4 tank left!!!

in my 88 f350... the gauge would always mess up on one of the tanks, sending unit kept going bad.. i need to figure it out tho, doesnt bother me none, but the old lady takes the truck alot, and you can be certain that if it runs outta fuel, and the gauge still shows above empty, im gona need battery's and a starter!! after i fuel her up again lol
